Who is Hannah?

Hannah was one of the first, and most challenging dogs to come into our program. An 11 year old German Shepherd, Hannah had been left in a backyard with little interaction after “the kids grew up” and had forgotten how to be a domestic dog, then was unceremoniously dumped at an area shelter as a frightened senior. She had no socialization skills with humans, severe dog aggression, and saw any small animal –especially cats- as prey. In fact, when she came to HHFS she didn’t even know her name. We changed her name to Hannah which means “God has favoured me” as we felt God had favoured her with a second chance. Over a series of several months and intense training, individual attention, rotation and extra precautions to keep everyone at the sanctuary safe, Hannah relearned how to love and be loved. She was able to be free to roam the ranch, play with the other dogs, and snuggle with the cats. Unfortunately, because she was not spayed until coming to HHFS, she developed extensive breast cancer and was only with us a short time after her reformation. In total, Hannah lived a wonderful life at HHFS of only 7 short months. However, she has left a legacy – she is proof that any dog regardless of age or challenges, with love and appropriate interaction, can learn to be a loving family member. The dogs that come into Hannah’s Hope are generally “long shots” and are given a second chance by HHFS in honor of Hannah.

Hannah’s Hope

Hannah’s Hope Canine Program is dedicated to helping dogs deemed “unadoptable” in area shelters for any number of reasons, find a second chance at adoption. Many of our canine partners simply couldn’t cope with the stress of shelter life and once removed from that setting, blossom into wonderful family pets. Some need a little extra help and encouragement to find that “inner pet”, and at HHFS we incorporate the dogs in to daily life, giving them a safe place to learn the necessary skills to find that forever home. In addition, HHFS takes in one or two senior dogs that are unlikely to find a home in a shelter situation, and provides them a safe and loving home to live out their days in peace.
