“Sanctuary, on a personal level, is where we perform the job of taking care of our

    soul.”

- Christopher Forrest McDowell

Neshamah is the name of the sanctuary encompassing all of our permanent residents from horses, dogs and cats, to chickens, ducks, goats and llamas. Many animals who will never meet the social, medical or physical requirements of adoption will live their lives in peace, knowing nothing but love and kindness for the remainder of their time on earth.

What is Neshamah?

Neshamah is the Hebrew word for “breath” although it is often translated as “soul” or “spirit”. Specifically Neshamah is the “breath of life” that God has bestowed into all his creatures. It is a reminder that we “all share one breath”* and therefore we are all connected and what befalls one befalls the other. We are charged with the care and safe keeping of all of God’s creatures, and should treat them with care and kindness. In addition, we believe HHFS is a wonderful place to slow down, just breathe, and reconnect with that life-giving spirit in all of us.

*“For that which happens to the sons of men happens to animals. Even one thing happens to them. As the one dies, so the other dies. Yet, they have all one breath; and man has no advantage over the animals: for all is vanity.” Eccl 3:19 NHV
